01. september 2010

Even though the summer is soon over, Elding's captain Magnśs "the magnificent“ is nowhere near to surrender.  Therefore the sea angling season has been extended. Throughout September we will continue to offer daily sea angling tours at 11 o‘clock, but we‘ve set the minimum number of passengers to 5 persons. Single travelers don’t have to worry though as most of the time it is possible for them to join a group of other eager fishermen. We recommend booking the tour in advance and/or being in touch with us to choose the most convenient date for carrying out this adventure.

We also want to remind you that from September 1st our whale watching tours will decrease. Scheduled whale watching tours are running at 9 o‘clock and 13 o‘clock everyday.

SEA ANGLING
Daily at 11:00. All equipment for the fishing included.

WHALE WATCHING
Daily at 09:00 and 13:00. Warm overalls provided free of charge. Café on board.

Best regards, The Elding team

These are the last days of the puffin season as there are very few individuals left in the colonies out off Reykjavik. The charismatic puffins arrive in Iceland in April and depart in mid August. The puffins lay one egg per year and keep the same mate every season. Rearing the chick is shared by both puffin parents. Puffins often live 20 years or more. On our tours, we come extremely close to the island, providing an excellent photo opportunity for our passengers.

Status: Local breeder and migrant
Residence: Arrives in April and departures in Aug-Sept.
Clutch size: Lays 1 egg
Nesting place: Makes a nest underground with two rooms, one “living room” and another one for the waste.
Population: 3 million pairs in Iceland
Fledging period: 35-56 days
Characteristic: sports a colourful red, yellow and blue beak during the breeding season. Puffins mate for life and return to the same nest every year.

August is usually a good month here in Iceland for whale watching and although the weather has been quite changeable we have been lucky with sightings. Mainly we have been spotting the minke whales, white beaked dolphins and harbour porpoises. We have also spotted basking sharks on some tours this month making the excursion at sea even more adventurous. Yesterday the Elding staff and the passengers enjoyed themselves on board as the weather at sea was very good and the minke whale were friendly. They were accompanied by various birds during the tour.. a wonderful experience. Check out our Whale Diary for daily updates from our tours.
