Status: unknown, heavily whaled

  • Found in deep waters in the northern North Atlantic
  • One of the deepest diving whales
  • Diet consists mostly of deep-water squid and fish
  • The blow is low and difficult to spot
  • Regularly approaches ships and this behaviour has made them more likely to be hunted
  • Among the few whales known to spend the entire year in cold waters
  • Has been seen playing and socializing, leaping out of the water
  • Long-term relationships have been observed among whales of the same sex, but not among mixed sexes
