Sandreyður

Balaenoptera borealis

Length: 12-16 metres

Weight:  20-30 tons

Life expectancy: about 80 years

Status: vulnerable, was intensively whaled

  • Arrives in the Icelandic waters in the spring after spending the winter in the South
  • Surfaces with it’s body more or less straightened, showing more of the whale when it blows and doesn’t arch it’s back when diving
  • Tends to shallow dive and has a regular diving pattern of several short dives with approximately 30 seconds intervals followed by diving for 5-10 minutes
  • The blow is up to 3 m high
  • Can have white ‘scaly’ patches on the dorsal area
  • Their ‘fluke prints’ are more visible than other whales’ due to their shallow dives
