Whale Watching
Take part in an adventure at sea with an unforgettable trip into the world of whales and sea birds. Conveniently located in Reykjavík’s old harbor, a 20-minute journey with Elding can bring you up close to whales in their natural habitat.
The various types of whales commonly sighted include minke whales, white-beaked dolphins, harbor porpoises, the popular humpback whales and killer whales (orcas). The majestic fin- and sei whales are also occasional companions to our boats. We will be accompanied by sea birds such as gannets, puffins, guillemots, cormorants, gulls, kittiwakes, arctic terns, and many more. Our trips take us past several islands inhabited by colonies of puffin – a great photo opportunity!
To make the trip even more comfortable, we provide our passengers with warm, floatable overalls and raincoats. For safety reasons, all children under 12 years of age are required to wear life jackets during the tour.
To ensure that the animals are not disturbed by our presence, we sail at a constant speed towards the whales’ habitat. As a result, a variety of species, from humpback whales to tiny porpoises, often surface within a few feet of the boat!
Fun for the children
Elding wants to make sure that the children are entertained during the trip. Therefore, there is a special children’s area inside the boat where they can play. The young ones can have fun playing with plush whales, puffin toys, coloring books and children’s books on whales and sea birds in many languages.
Whale watching tours
Summer season is great for whale watching, as the wildlife in the bay is at its highest peak. This is the time when the migrating whales and birds entertain us with their magnificent presence in the happy company of the resident whales. Commonly seen are minke whales, white-beaked dolphins, harbour porpoises and humpback whales. During the puffin season, mid May to mid August, we stop by one of the puffin islands for a closer look at these charismatic birds.
